Triangle Tikkun Next Meeting Dec 9, 2007, 4-6pm

WHAT: Showing of the short Oscar-winning short film “West Bank Story”, directed by Ari Sandel. The film is a satirical “musical comedy” set in the West Bank, about David, an Israeli soldier whose family owns a falafel stand, who falls in love with Fatima, the Palestinian daughter of a competing falafel stand owner. The film is a metaphor for the conflicted relations between Palestinians and Israelis. It has been widely shown in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world. (While widely acclaimed, the film may seem somewhat insensitive about traditional courtship and dress for Muslim women. See trailer: www.westbankstory.com/new/trailer.htm)

"West Bank Story, a re-telling of the conflict in the Middle East filtered through West Side Story was the funniest and most perfect short of the festival." --- FILMS IN REVIEW, Hamptons Intl Film Festival

Read more on the film: www.westbankstory.com/index.html

The film will be followed by a light potluck meal and discussion about the film in the context of Palestine-Israel relations and Triangle Tikkun’s new and ongoing projects to foster deeper interfaith understanding and support for a just peace in Israel-Palestine.

Co-sponsored by Peace and Social Concerns Committee, Durham Friends Meeting.

WHEN: Sunday December 9 2007 4 pm – 6 pm
WHERE: Durham Friends Meetinghouse, 404 Alexander Ave, Durham 27705, 919-286-4958 (map).

Triangle Tikkun meeting Saturday November 17th 4pm

How do we continue on the path together?

As a follow-up to the “Walls or Bridges?” community form, we will discuss the feedback we received from participants on projects and programs that will continue to foster peace and understanding in the Middle East and amongst our local interfaith communities. We will discuss these in the context of the following Triangle Tikkun project areas
1) Building on and deepening trust and understanding with the local Jewish, Muslim, Christian and other communities. We are interested in furthering frank and open interfaith dialogues and events on Israel-Palestine, our faiths, and other issues, and starting outreach to e,g. youth groups within these communities.

2) Active support for an ongoing project in the local community that will enable these faith groups to work together (e.g. the Stop Hunger program).

3) Active support for an ongoing joint Israeli-Palestinian humanitarian project in Israel/Palestine. We will present several projects that Tikkun could participate in.

4) Engaging people in the "middle ground" of our local faith communities. We are interested in getting beyond the typical left-right political divisions that often alienate individuals from joining  together around common concerns such as poverty and the environment.
When:   Saturday November 17th 4pm
What:    Informal finger-food potluck followed by Havdalah (a short ceremony marking the end of the Jewish sabbath). The discussion will begin at 5pm
Where: Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Rd, Raleigh (www.templebethor-raleigh.org/map.htm)

"Walls Or Bridges - Possibilities for Peace in Israel-Palestine"

A Community Forum jointly presented by Triangle Tikkun and the Muslim American Public Affairs Council

WHEN: Oct 21, 2007: 1:30-5:30 p.m.

WHERE: Marbles Kids (Exploris) Museum, 201 East Hargett St., Raleigh

There will be two keynote speakers: Dr. Mazim Qumsiyeh, a former professor at Yale University and Palestinian activist, and Jan Jaben
Eilon
, a national board member of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom (the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace).

The speakers will be followed by a panel discussion with local community leaders.  It will be moderated by Chuck Fager of Quaker House,
Fayetteville. The panel will invite the forum attendees to engage in conversation that explores our similarities and differences, as a step to seek middle ground.

We all know that it is easier to maintain our entrenched positions. We know the challenge of looking for the humanity in the "opposition", and
we know such exploration is hard. The forum offers an opportunity to take up such a challenge.

Admission is free.

Abraham in our Faiths

A Panel Discussion cosponsored by Triangle Tikkun and the NC Muslim American Society

Sunday—January 15, 2006—5-8pm
Panel discussion 5-6:30pm
Potluck Supper 6:30-8 pm

Durham Friends Meeting House
404 Alexander Avenue, Durham, NC
Near the Duke University Campus

Jews, Christians, and Muslims all claim Abraham as their spiritual father. His name itself means “father of nations”. The Torah describes the Divine’s covenant with Abraham, through his wife Sarah, in Genesis. In Romans, the apostle Paul calls Abraham "the father of all those who believe". Abraham is reported in the Qu’ran as the first user of the word "Islam"

Muslims, Christians and Jews agree that Abraham was called up to sacrifice his son. He was willing to do so, but the Almighty gave Abraham a sheep to sacrifice instead of his beloved son. Jews and Christians believe that the son to be sacrificed was Isaac whereas Muslims believe it was Ishmael.

Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) is a four-day Islamic holiday, honoring the saving of Abraham's son, after the patriarch offered to sacrifice him. In honor of the Feast, the NC Muslim American Society, and Triangle Tikkun invite you to a panel discussion on “Abraham in our Faith” followed by a potluck supper. The panelists are:

Iyad Hindi is an active member of Raleigh’s largest mosque, the Islamic Association of Raleigh and is part of the MAS National Outreach Committee. Iyad has worked with youth, participated in interfaith work, and worked for Palestinian human rights.

Rabbi Raachel Jurovics is the assistant rabbi at Temple Beth Or in Raleigh. She holds a PhD in English literature and was ordained at the Jewish Renewal Seminary in 2003. Raachel participates in several Triangle and statewide interfaith projects.

Rev Mike Watts is an ordained Southern Baptist minister who has served as Deacon and adult educator in Pullen Baptist Church. Mike is engaged in many interfaith projects and is assistant curator of the Johnston County Heritage Center.

Read about Abraham:

From the Torah:

Genesis 22:1-18

From the Christian Bible:

Romans 4:1-25

From the Qu'ran:

Surah 26:70-85

December 10, 2005 Saturday evening in Durham.

Father Jacek Orzechowski of Immaculate Conception Church in Durham will talk on his experience in Hebron focusing on:

Christian, Muslim, and Jewish religious extremism inflaming the conflict in Hebron

Al-Khalil and Hevron are the Arabic and Hebrew names for the city where Abraham, the father of all three great monotheistic religious Traditions is buried.   In both languages, the name of the city means “friend.” However, since the beginning of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank , Hebron has been one of the region’s hot spots.

Former Israeli Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Shaul Mofaz even called Hebron “the most difficult place” whose frictions “can ignite the whole of Judea and Samaria .”

Having recently returned from work with the Christian Peacemakers Team in Hebron, Father Jacek will present a case study of the religious extremism in that city, pointing out it historical trajectory and the powerful political forces behind it.

The meeting will be at 1013 Green Street, Durham. Phone 919-688-0077 for more information or click here for a map.  We will begin at 5:45 for Havdalah (brief ceremony marking the end of Shabbat), followed by a potluck, and Fr Jacek’s talk.

October 9, 2005 Sunday in Raleigh
Triangle TIKKUN's (normally scheduled October 9th) is replaced by a special interfaith dinner and speakers cosponsored by the Muslim American Society (MAS) on Sunday October 16th at 6pm. This is the second event of a series of jointly sponsored gatherings by Triangle Tikkun and the Muslim community, including MAS and MAPAC.

Please join us on Sunday October 16th to learn and talk about commonalities and differences with the Muslim holiday of Ramadan and the Jewish High Holidays (Days of Awe).

In the Jewish calendar the Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe) begin with Rosh Hashanah (New Year) and end ten days later with Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). The Days of Awe are dedicated to soul-searching and mending relationships through teshuvah (repentance or return), tefillah (prayer), and tzedakah (good deeds or charity). Yom Kippur is probably the most important Jewish holiday, and is thus observed by Jews who are otherwise secular. Yom Kippur is mentioned in Leviticus 23-26 and it is observed through synagogue prayer and fasting.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and it commemorates Allah revealing  the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, to Mohammad. Around 610 C.E. the angel Gabriel told Muhammad that he had been chosen to receive the word of Allah. Soon, Muhammad found himself speaking the verses that would become the Qur'an. Ramadan is a time for inner reflection, devotion to Allah, and self-control. Muslims practice sawm, or fasting, for the entire month of Ramadan. They do not eat or drink anything, including water, during daylight.

In 2005, the Days of Awe (sundown on October 3rd through sundown on October 13th) and Ramadan (October 4th through November 2) overlap.

On Sunday October 16th, MAS and Tikkun invite you to a discussion featuring religious leaders who will lead us in understanding  the commonalities and differences in some of the practices and meanings of these holidays to each faith community.  Rabbi Eric Solomon will talk on the Days of Awe and Iyad Hindi will discuss Ramadan. This will be followed by a question and answer session.

The program begins at 6:00pm.  At sundown, there will be a traditional iftar, or breaking of the Ramadan fast, followed by a dinner provided by MAS.

The program will be at the MAS office at 5535 Western Boulevard, Suite 204, Raleigh. Phone: 852-0070. Click here for a map.

For more information on the convergence of Ramadan and the Days of Awe, see God's October Surprise by Rabbi Arthur Waskow.
